Thomas Hobbes

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), a British political philosopher, made a materialistic science out of the study of human nature and politics. He believed that all things were made of material bodies--physical bodies, human bodies, and even the "body politic." He argued that people are basically selfish and that therefore only a strong sovereign ruler could hold a state together.
